How to grow vegetables

Fresh_vegetables

There are three big tips for great home grown vegetables.

1.       SUN                2.  SOIL          3.  WATER

SUN

All plants need light. Most plants (fruit and veg) grown for human consumption need full sun to produce to their full potential. Select the sunniest part you can for your own veggie plot.

SOIL

Great soil = great vegies. Rich, humus filled soil and the use of fertilisers will keep your veggie garden producing great crops. Dig in manure or compost on a regular basis to build up your soil.

WATER

As with all plants, adequate water means great growth and a good return from your investment. A water stressed garden slows growth, and reduces production. Mulch on top of the soil to add organic matter, help control weeds and reduce water loss.

OTHER TIPS

Our veggie garden incorporates a chicken pen. This allows us to feed the chickens all our weeds and left over garden refuse, and use the chicken manure to improve the soil. Any scrapings from the chicken pen are used as mulch. The chickens, in return, supply eggs (and meat if you’re game). The chickens can also be used to turn over fallow beds and help control weeds (just remember to pen them to an area or watch them while they are out, as they will surely eat your favourite crop when you are not looking). Crop rotation practices and companion planting options are also to be considered.

Your home veggie patch should reward you with great fresh produce that will taste great and be super healthy. You can even preserve or share your excesses!

Why not incorporate a lime tree or some small fruiting plants like blueberries or strawberries into your veggie garden too. This adds some dimension and interest to the garden. Asparagus is an easy plant to grow. The plants live forever and get better every year!

There are so many ways to enjoy fresh food from your very own garden. Why not give it a try today.
